A double-sided grinder consists of an initial grinding surface that rotates clockwise, and a second rotating surface that rotates anticlockwise. The first rotating face generally known as a fixed blade. The second rotating face is called a variable blade, which can vary in length based upon the need. Either blade can be used in the same grinding operation or be used alternately for different operations. The two blades are mounted on either side of the chuck in a position that allows them to rotate simultaneously without interference from each other.
The basic design of a double-sided grinder comprises of a chuck with two rotating surfaces that spin simultaneously. A single-sided grinder has a single grinding surface. In this type of machine, the upper surface of the chuck is stationary while the lower face of the machine rotates clockwise. A two-sided grinder has the same configuration; however, the top surface of the machine is stationary and the lower face of the machine rotates anticlockwise, allowing the workpiece to be ground simultaneously.
A double-sided grinder has a number of uses, including grinding, polishing and cutting. A grinding machine is designed for use in polishing and finishing jewelry, metals such as steel and bronze, granite, marble, and glass. Most commercial grinders consist of a diamond-tipped grinding stone located at the center of the unit, surrounded by a disc of compressed air. This airless grinding device will hold either fine or coarse material. The diamond-tipped grinding stone will generate very high temperatures, which is necessary for performing the detailed polishing process.
Two-sided grinders are used to perform both grinding and polishing. Some examples of two-sided grinders are router grinders and a mill grinders. Router grinders consist of a burr wheel and blade that are rotationally driven. A two-sided grinder has the same basic design as the burr-wheel and blade, but also incorporates an inner buffer to hold soft metal and prevent overheating. These types of grinders are often mounted in table saw machines.
Polishing is accomplished with a machine called a polishing cutter. The two types of grinders that use the polishing cutter are a drum grind and a line grind. A two-sided grinder consists of a spinning blade and diamond-tipped grinding stone, but sometimes incorporates a buffing pads. A polishing cutter is most effective at producing very smooth finishes on metals; therefore it is not suitable for all types of metal working.
When it comes to the grinding head, the choice is simple. A two-sided or a polishing machine may be used depending on the type of material to be worked with and the desired finish desired. Each type of grinding machine is available for a specific application, but there are two common types of grinders: the hammering and the rotating blade grinders. A rotary blade grinder has a large variety of attachments that can be attached on it including: wedges, grinding wheels, belt grinders, extractors and diamond-tipped grinders.
