The Benefits of Wire EDM

Metal cutting is often considered the most “in” thing for EDM, especially with today’s metal fabrication processes. But what about wire cutting EDM? What are the benefits of wire cutting for EDM?

Wire cutting is a process by which a wire is formed into its final shape. In a wire saw, wire is fed into a cutter that will cut it. A surface grinder is used to shape the wire into a desired shape. When cutting into flat shapes, metal cutting tools are used to widen the groove of the wire. This is done to help a smooth finish.

For those new to wire EDM, the process begins with the wire being fed into the saw. It is then heated and placed into a groove in the blade.

Tools used for wire EDM are often precision cutting tools that have a higher RPM than other tools. These tools are usually manufactured using a sealed helical cutter. This is a high torque motor designed to cut wire with precision. The ultimate aim of the wire EDM tool is to shape the wire into the desired shape and size.

Some wire EDM tools can be used on different metals. The majority of wire EDM tools used for this process are made for electrical and mechanical wires. However, the saw can also be used on materials such as plastic. With this versatility comes increased cost.

The final step to wire EDM is cleaning. Cleaned wires are generally considered to be more durable and more resistant to damage. Wire EDM is used to clean up stubborn or dirty wires that may have been damaged during the sawing process. Cleaned wires can be reused for future projects.

Wire EDM can also be used on a variety of substrates such as plastics, and stainless steel. The finer the wire the more time is needed to finish the surface. Some tools can be used to finish a surface quickly, although these tools are usually considered a bit too much for most wire EDM.

As with all EDM (electrical / electronic data) projects, choosing the right wire cutting machine is important. This is true for many types of metals, materials, tools, and finishes. Wire EDM for most projects can be completed quite easily using a wire saw, but there are times when certain tools are required to get the job done right.
